Questions from county collectors

What is a counties visited map?

A counties visited map is a map of the United States with every county you have been to filled in, a finer grain than a states map, so a drive across one corner of Texas counts as the few counties it crossed rather than the whole state. TripProf's counties visited map at usa.tripprof.com/counties is free, runs in the browser, and needs no account.

How do I mark the counties I have visited?

Open TripProf's counties map at usa.tripprof.com/counties, pick a state from the list or the search, and tap each county you have been to, on the map or in the alphabetical list beside it. The total updates as you go, and the back arrow returns you to the list of states.

How many counties are on the map?

TripProf's counties map has 3,231 county equivalents: 3,141 in the 50 states, Washington DC, and 89 in Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands. Each state shows how many of its own you have marked, out of its total.

Does marking a county mark its state too?

Yes. On TripProf's counties map, the first county you mark in a state also marks that state as visited, so your states count and your counties count always agree. Marking a state on its own never marks any of its counties.

What about parishes, boroughs and municipios?

TripProf's counties map uses each place's own word: parishes in Louisiana, boroughs in Alaska, municipios in Puerto Rico, and counties everywhere else. Alaska's census areas and Virginia's independent cities are included in their state's total.

How is Connecticut shown?

TripProf's counties map shows Connecticut as its 8 historic counties. The Census Bureau replaced them with 9 planning regions as county equivalents in 2022, but the 8 counties are the ones on the map.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

TripProf's counties map is free and needs no account. Your map is saved in your own browser, nothing is uploaded until you choose to make a share link, and it is the same map as the states map at usa.tripprof.com, so the states you mark show on both.

Can I share my county map?

Yes. TripProf's counties map turns your map into a shareable image sized for social posts, with your county count on it, and gives you a link someone else can open to see your map and start their own.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. TripProf's counties map runs in a mobile browser as well as on a desktop. On a phone, pick a state from the list and its counties open large enough to tap one by one.
